Your Family’s photography session

Family photography Brisbane

Family portraits are not just about capturing the perfect shot; they’re about making memories. The laughter, the playfulness, and even the occasional chaos of a photoshoot are all part of the experience. These sessions are a wonderful opportunity to bond and create stories that you’ll fondly look back on for years to come.

These moments are more than just pictures; they’re a way to capture the love, connection, and unique personalities that make your family special. I capture beautiful family photography sessions in Brisbane, and I love it! Nothing makes my heart happier than capturing memories for families.

The best time of year for Family Portraits

Hands-down my favourite time of year for family photography sessions in Brisbane, is anytime aside from Summer, haha! If you’re a Queenslander, you’ll know why! The sticky, humid unpredictable weather, the rain and the heat!

That’s why I love family photography sessions in Winter, Autumn and Spring.

Winter and Autumn offers beautiful crisp mornings, later sunrises, earlier sunsets, and sunny skies!
Spring sessions start to bring some beautiful warmth, with pretty wildflowers and weeds, and long grass in the beautiful outdoors.

Portraits in Winter, Autumn & Spring

If you have young kiddies, early evenings can be crazy-time, so Winter is perfect for an early family photography session! Our family photography sessions in Brisbane are around 3-4pm, perfect time after school or on the weekend to gather your family and enjoy some time in the beautiful, crisp air.

what to wear for family portraits

Coordination is key!

As you prepare for your outdoor family portrait session, one of the most important considerations is what to wear. The right outfits can elevate your photos and ensure everyone looks and feels their best.

Aim for coordinated outfits rather than identical ones. Choose a color palette with 2-3 complementary colors and mix different shades and textures within that palette. This creates a cohesive look without everyone looking too matchy-matchy. For example, earthy tones like mustard, olive, and cream work beautifully in natural settings.

Before the day of the photoshoot, lay out all the outfits together to see how they look as a group. This helps you visualise the overall look and make any adjustments needed.

Most importantly, have fun with it! Your family’s personalities and connections are what truly make the photos special. Wear what makes you feel good, relax, and enjoy the moment.

choosing the perfect location

Beach, bush or your favourite place!

Before your family photography session we’ll chat about what you’d love from your portraits, and which location you have in mind.

Locations can vary greatly, and just like outfits and colours, these will adorn your walls for years to come, so it’s important to choose the location you love most.

Beaches gives us beautiful, soft tones, creamy sand and sometimes stunning sunsets.

Bush, long grass and paddock locations all change greatly throughout the year pending on the location, so if you love the grassy paddock feel, I’ll scout out the best place closest to the time.

And of course, if you have a fave place, playground, home location, or coffee shop, let’s go there! If it’s important to you, it’s important to me.

how to prepare your kids for photos

Getting ready for a family photoshoot is always exciting, but when you have kids in the mix, it can come with its own set of challenges.

Prepare your older kids by talking about the photoshoot a few days before the session. Make it sound like a fun family activity rather than a chore. If you have younger kids, just dress them and get them ready. Ensure they’ve had a rest or a sleep!

Maintain a positive attitude and keep things light-hearted. If you’re excited and relaxed, your kids are more likely to be, too. Avoid putting too much pressure on them to “behave” perfectly. Leave your kids to me, kids are usually WAY more receptive to the photographer than to their own parents – and yes, my kids do the same thing, too! Just smile and laugh and love on them, and leave me to help with the rest.

When kids are happy, they smile

Kids can be unpredictable, and that’s okay. It’s my job as your photographer to friend your little ones, encourage fun and excitement, and help adults to smile and love on their kids.

Stay flexible and patient. If kids need a break or aren’t cooperating, that’s ok! They might just need a big mummy-hug. Sometimes the best photos are the candid, unplanned moments, so hugs and quiet time is captured, too.

Remember, the goal is to capture your family’s love and connection. Let your kids be themselves, and focus on having fun together. Genuine smiles and laughter make for the best photos.

don’t like being photographed?

Getting reluctant family members excited about Family Portraits

Family photos are a wonderful way to capture special moments, but sometimes, not everyone is as enthusiastic about being in front of the camera.

Sometimes the best moments are the unposed, genuine connections, laughing, hugging, leaning close to each other, and just enjoying each other’s company. It’s here where we aim to be, to relax all family members, reduce the pressure to “smile”, and capture the love and connection I see.

If your partner or other adult in the group is reluctant to be photographed, please take the pressure off them. We don’t do deals, or offers, or bribes, as we don’t need to. I’m simply here to photograph your family together, so we want to allow reluctant family members to just “be” with each other, tickle the kids, hug their partner, and ignore the photographer.

Believe me, I get it. I’m awkward in front of the camera too. But I also know that if you concentrate on loving on your family, the smiles will come naturally, not forced.

Because when we’re happy, we smile. Kids and adults included.

capturing generations

Your family’s photoshoot is more than just taking pictures—it’s about celebrating this beautiful chapter in your life. It’s a chance to slow down and savour these special moments, to laugh and hug your kids, and spend time together, just being with each other.

I love capturing older generations, Grandparents, extended families and everyone who matters to you. It’s very rare to have everyone together for a happy occasion, usually a 21st birthday or a wedding is the only time we make time for this.

So to capture your family as you are, right now, is such an honour. And so very important.

Because if not now, when?

creating a photo wall

There’s simply more to capturing your photographs, than supplying you with digital images.

And yes, I know you want and love digital images, so I make it super easy to have those! Every print, artwork, frame, canvas or album you purchase, includes matching digital image files – so you don’t need to worry about receiving them, just choose your fave artwork, and this is included!

Photo walls are a beautiful way of showing artwork in your home, for years to come, and I’ll help design the best photo wall to suit your images!

And if you need more photo wall inspiration, check out Pinterest for hundreds of beautiful layouts!

And better yet – wall art is fully installed on your walls by our licenced professional installer.
No need to lift a finger! Or a hammer.

family photo albums

Beautiful printed Albums are the best way of showing off your artwork, handing it around to friends, and looking through every photo, again and again!

Personally albums are one of my favourite things, and I print Albums of our family, every year! So we’re continually updating our family photos, printing our treasured memories and remembering our favourite times together.

Printed Albums come with all the matching digital images, so there’s plenty to see, and plenty to share.
